Day 1 -- "Blue Boy" Peppers

I'm starting this one from seed in a general potting soil with three sticks of organic all-purpose fertilizer. There are 3 seeds planted in this pot, which is sitting in my bedroom window (lots of light there). Since the ultimate goal of these experiments is to figure out some of the edible plant species that can be grown in small spaces indoors, I think this particular variety should be a good choice. I've gotten this kind of plant to grow to the point of flowering in a 4" pot indoors, and it seems to be very tolerant of heat fluctuations. It's also quite small, growing to a height of about 8" and not bushing out very much at all.

This plant will be grown strictly indoors in my basement suite during this fall semester, and I'll be updating this blog as this and other growing projects progress. I'll probably need to pick up a UVA/UVB light a bit later in the year, but there should be enough light for now to get things going. I picked out a nice 6" ceramic pot to grow it in. Ceramic is considerably more expensive than terra cotta, but unlike terra cotta, it keeps moisture in the soil and, by extension, in your plant much, much better. This can be a huge benefit for growing plants that aren't so forgiven when you accidentally forget to water them. Plus, it looks a lot nicer.

Remember: if I can grow it in a small, dark basement suite, you can grow it, too.
